How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?

There’s an old joke that goes, “A pedestrian on 57th Street asks a musician getting out of a cab, ‘How do you get to Carnegie Hall?’ The musician answers, ‘Practice, practice, practice.”

I’m often asked, “How can I make a lot of money in sales?” The answer is the same.

Are their some traits that tend to make you more likely to be successful in sales if you have them? Absolutely. Outgoing vs. shy. Eloquent vs. stumbling speech. Friendly vs. cold. And many more. But just because you’re missing some, or all, of those traits it does not mean you can’t be successful at selling and make a ton of money. Practice, practice, practice.

When was the last time you read a book about sales?
When was the last time you went to a sales training seminar?
When was the last time you watched FREE YouTube videos about selling?
When was the last time you invested in a course about selling? (One of mine is called Conversational Selling Skills and the other is Professional Prospecting)
When was the last time you role played?
When was the last time you went to your manager/mentor and asked for help improving?
When was the last time you invested in a sales coach?

I want to be great at everything with no effort.

Been playing guitar for 59 years. I play about as well as someone who’s been playing for 59 days. Why? Very little practice.

I’ve been doing stand-up comedy for 3.5 years. I’m funny, but I could be much better if I invested more time in writing new material and going to open mics to work that material out on a nightly basis.

How did I get good at selling? Not because I have some of the right traits….but because I did (and continue to do) all the other stuff I mentioned above, for the last 50 years.

Are you committed to making 2025 a GREAT year for you financially from your selling efforts? There’s a price to pay for everything. Commit to paying the price this year.

Practice. Practice. Practice.
